Summary At the end of the eleventh century, Armenia was occupied by the Turks, but further south, on the shores of the Mediterranean, opposite the island of Cyprus, a new Armenian state was soon to be reborn. The Cilician Armenian monarchs over a period of two centuries provided a remarkable impetus to commerce and the arts while consolidating their independence. The impressive Armenian fortresses of the Taurus Mountains exemplify the best quality of military architecture, and the illuminations of Toros Roslin and Sarkis Bidzag are second to none
