Summary Remi Van Steenkiste was interviewed by Kae Halonen as part of the Center for the Study of Automotive Heritage's MotorCities Memories Oral History Project. Mr. Van Steenkiste was the son of immigrant parents from Belgium. His father worked for over 27 years for Ford Motor Company, mostly in the Rouge Plant's foundry. At the age of 13, Remi was accepted into the Henry Ford Trade School where he was trained in tool and die making as well as drafting and design. He graduated but continued his education there because he was too young to get a Ford badge to work in one of the plants. Remi talks about the trade school including the ethnic and racial make up of the school and visits by Henry Ford. He talks about the need for the union, experiences with Harry Bennett's "service men" and the "Battle of the Overpass". In 1943, he was drafted into the armed forces, eventually trained as a pilot and flew with the 8th Air Force in England. After the war, he went back to Ford Motor Company for 40 years until he retired
