Summary Quill Pettway was interviewed by Kae Halonen as part of the Center for the Study of Automotive Heritage's MotorCities Memories Oral History Project. Mr. Pettway came to Detroit as a child. He worked for the Ford Motor Company for 27 years, most of the time at the Rouge plant. He talks of his apprenticeship experiences and various jobs he did while working for Ford. He also speaks of race relations between fellow workers there and race relations within the Union. He was a strong union supporter and talks about conditions in the plant before and after the union was established, including remembrances of Harry Bennett's "goon squads", as the union workers called Bennett's security forces. Mr. Pettway eventually went into teaching, working at Wayne County Community College
